Income tax specialists focused on business relationships and expertise.

Balanced Ledgers Inc. History

Balanced Ledgers Inc was established in 1986 by David Harvey EA MS, starting as a one person, full service accounting and tax practice serving individuals and small businesses. In September of 2003, we moved into our present location in Thornton, at which time Chris Jones EA joined the practice on a part time basis while he continued working full time for a large national corporation. Chris then joined full time in April 2012. Kelsey also began working at BLI part time while attending college before joining full time post-graduation in 2022. We are proud to note that we are a family business, now with three generations in office.

We specialize in income tax planning and preparation for Individuals, S Corporations, Partnerships, LLC's and Trusts and offer consulting and support services for small businesses. Since our inception we have grown our practice to currently serve more than 1000 individuals and over 200 entities. Even with this growth, many of our clients have been with us since Dave established BLI. We believe this is due to our value of professional relationships, where our dedication to clients reaches beyond a single tax-season appointment. Our goal is not to get clients in and out of our office as fast as possible, but to help our clients become prepared and well informed taxpayers.

C DAVID HARVEY: EA, MS, ABA, ECS, ATA

My first career job was in commercial banking where I worked in lending. I ended that career as a senior VP in charge of lending at one the Colorado Bank Holding companies.  I always had an interest in income taxes, and there happened to be a CPA firm across the street from the bank I worked at. So, during tax season, I would walk across the street, pickup a stack of folders and pencil them in to be dropped off the next morning on my way to work.

Then a funny thing happened about 30+ years ago. I didn't like my job anymore. A client of mine at the bank who had a lucrative accounting practice said he thought I could start a practice somewhat like his. I set out to obtain some bookkeeping clients, gave my notice of resignation to the bank, continued my education to receive my masters in taxation and upgraded my computer and software (not necessarily in that order). After completing my masters in taxation I took and passed the EA exams and have continued many hours of CPE. I average taking over 50 hours a year even though only 24 are required for my license, simply because I enjoy learning all about the tax world.

I originated my office out of my home. Due to my client base in banking and my acquaintances who were EAs, CPAs and bookkeepers, I was able to quickly build a bookkeeping and tax client base. Since then we have moved into our current office, where many of my client followed. Just as much as I enjoy my work, I enjoy seeing the same faces now that I did when I started out, along with many new ones along the way.

Christopher Jones: EA, RTRP

My accounting and tax career began in 1997 with a national building material company as an administrative manager where I was responsible for accounting, payroll and human resource functions. During the next 15+ years my rolls changed significantly and I eventually ended up in an operation role running distribution and delivery facilities. After waking up one day and realizing I had somehow been pulled away from my family and what I wanted to be when I grew up, an opportunity to join the team at Balanced Ledgers presented itself which became a very easy decision.  I joined Balanced Ledgers full time in April 2012, obtained the RTRP certification from the IRS in October 2012 and completed my EA in July 2017.

I enjoy the personal interaction with my clients and strive to create long lasting business relationships based on trust and mutual respect.  It is important to me to have a high level of expertise when dealing with a variety of client situations, so I am always learning and researching to become the best provider I can be.

Kelsey Jones: EA

After taking an accounting class in high school, I knew I wanted to join my family’s business at Balanced Ledgers. Eager to kickstart my career, I graduated high school a semester early and worked my fist tax season at BLI. From there, I spent three years at the University of Northern Colorado earning my degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting. While attending UNC, I worked as a Class Leader for their University101 program, became the president of professional fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi, and graduated as Cum Laude. I never truly left the office however, as I continued to work at Balanced ledgers during summers and on weekends throughout college. After graduating in May of 2022, I started with BLI full-time and immediately began studying to become an Enrolled Agent. As of January 2024, I’m proud to say that I am officially an EA.

I’m excited to continue building my expertise and professional relationships with Balance Ledgers clients. I enjoy learning from Dave and Chris’s experience as I gain my own. As I begin taking on clients of my own, my goal is to create a foundational relationship where we can plan and prepare for changes in clients lives and changes in the tax laws.
